The Astronomer's Dream

One thing I'm always reluctant to share with you folks is anything too long, or too strange.
I find people have wildly varying degrees of patience for abstract and weird artistic explorations; and as we all know, the internet only serves to drive our collective attention span for everything even lower.* While my personal threshold for artsy fartsy peculiarity is on the high side, I understand that for many this is not the case.
The following short film clocks in at about 11 minutes long, and one would be hard pressed at the conclusion of those minutes to describe what the film was 'about'. (Warning: There's really not much concerning Astronomy in this piece) Don't get me wrong; it's not like we're just looking at random images and listening to abstract sounds. There's certainly a story being told here. It's just that it's a, well, strange story.
What the film does do quite effectively is show off the magnificent illustration and animation style of it's creator, Malcolm Sutherland; while also revealing the vibrantly imaginative and bizarre world that he's capable of creating. The ornate imagery of Malcolm's strange alien universe recollect visual cues such as Mayan pottery and Samurai armour; a graphical style that's entirely engrossing. On top of that, there's an ominous tone to the piece that works perfectly to contrast its cartoony sensibilities.
In short, I loved this little short film, enough so to pass it along to all of you; despite whichever rules I normally hold myself to.

Why did anyone bother making art before there were computers? I mean, don't get me wrong; I love the more traditional forms of image crafting, but they're just so hard to do! I recently finished a painting project that took me weeks, and the whole time I just kept wishing I could add an adjustment layer* here, or tweak the saturation there. Computers make art faster, letting us pump out big bushels of artwork, with no apparent end in sight.
The other thing computers allow us to do is play with more easily with geometric forms, something Cristian Boian does exceptionally well. I'm never sure exactly how these sorts of Euclidean illustrations are made, but somehow Cristian turns geometry into something very organic and beautiful. These forms create an intricate and elegant motif that can be found throughout his work.
When I feature a still artist I like to show lots of samples, and often their entire portfolio ends up in my post. Not so with Cristian. In his case I barely dented the surface.
