IKEA visits UNICEF programs in South Africa

IKEA continues to be UNICEF's largest global corporate cash donor, providing significant support for UNICEF's education programs, including UNICEF's Schools for Africa program. Last year, IKEA and its customers contributed over $1 million to the U.S. Fund for UNICEF through the company's annual soft toy campaign and UNICEF greeting card sales, which generated over $10 million for UNICEF globally.

IKEA co-workers (employees) are instrumental to the success of the soft toy campaign and IKEA's overall partnership with UNICEF. Following the 2011 campaign, two IKEA co-workers from top performing IKEA stores in the United States were selected to have the opportunity to travel to see UNICEF's programs and the impact of IKEA's donations for children firsthand. These co-workers - Andrea Sorensen and Deandrea Flick - will be traveling to South Africa next week on a UNICEF-hosted trip.

What are you looking forward to the most about your trip to South Africa?

"Seeing all the wonderful things UNICEF does. I donate to many children's organizations here locally, but would love to do more hands on. Being with the children and working with UNICEF will take me to the next level. My husband and I also love to help Cincinnati Children's Hospital, St Jude's organization, Habitat for Humanity, and our local store charity, Reach Out Lakota."

What inspired you to be so involved in making the Soft Toy Campaign a success?

"I have always loved children and have a very strong passion for their well being. Also, I struggled with education myself from second grade on. I was lucky to have specialists to help me grow and understand. Many children do not have things like that."

"I am a Godmother to three children that I helped raise since birth: Justine (4 years), Michael (5 years), and Maximo (7 years). I felt there was always a reason that I never had a child myself; and my husband and I were put on this earth to help take care of the children that need us."

"This is still unbelievable to me. This trip reinforces my strong feelings about giving and service. The smallest $0.49 toy can make a huge difference. I want to share with my store that it's not about increasing sales, it's about saving and changing lives. "I am also very excited to work with UNICEF and the people in South Africa. My grandmother is from South Africa and it will be interesting to see where she came from. I am so incredibly thankful to my store for selecting me and to IKEA and UNICEF for making this possible."

What inspired you to be so involved in making the Soft Toy Campaign a success?

"I am a mother to a lovely 6-year-old girl. She was my inspiration and drive for participating in the soft toy campaign."

"She is very giving and sympathetic. I had worn my UNICEF buttons home from work and had them sitting on my sideboard so I would remember to grab them the next day. My daughter asked me what they were for and I explained to her that we could help kids in need to have a better education and a better everyday life simply by buying toys. She couldn't believe it! She has had a piggy bank for most of her life and it has never been touched for anything. My daughter got a huge smile on her face and I could see the idea in her head light up. She wanted to donate $2.00 to buy soft toys for kids. After a few minutes she came back up to me and told me that she was going to do something even better. She was going to give me $3.00! My eyes welled up with tears. I am so proud of her."

The end of blinding trachoma in sight

As part of its commitment to securing a better future for children, the U.S. Fund for UNICEF works closely with the International Trachoma Initiative and Pfizer Inc. to eliminate blinding trachoma.

You might remember that in June of 2011, the trachoma community took a major step forward with the deployment of new, innovative tools to map the community's efforts in trachoma-endemic regions throughout the world. Now, that same international coalition of partners has published a global strategy with milestones to meet and steps to take in order to achieve its goal of eliminating trachoma by 2020.

The report, called "2020 INSight," highlights the urgent need for action to avoid additional suffering and unnecessary blindness for hundreds of thousands of people. It is produced by the International Coalition for Trachoma Control (ICTC) and available at ICTC's website.

The figures are astounding: blinding trachoma, endemic in 57 countries, blinds an estimated four people every hour. More than 2 million people are either blind or suffer excruciating pain because of trachoma, and about 4.6 million need surgery (part of the World Health Organization-endorsed "SAFE" strategy to prevent trachoma) to prevent them from going blind.

Field visit to Sierra Leone

Our recent field visit to Sierra Leone not only provided incredible insight into UNICEF's lifesaving work in the field, but also gave us the opportunity to meet the resilient children of Sierra Leone.

Although we were aware of the pressing issues affecting Sierra Leone, it was the personal accounts and stories that brought light to the impact of UNICEF's work and were the most meaningful. One of the most touching moments of the entire trip was our visit to HAPPY, a center that provides care and support to children and adolescents affected and infected by HIV/AIDS. Their strength moved us, and after hearing their song "Warrior" about their resilience and spirit, it became clear to me that this journey was going to be truly unforgettable.

We learned that only 23% of all primary schools have functional water and more than half of all primary schools in Sierra Leone have no sanitation facilities. The children from the Ansarul Islam School in Kissy Dockyard, Freetown, which has 1,343 students total, welcomed us with open arms our first day in Freetown. UNICEF is working with a local NGO to build latrines and improve access to safe water and sanitation. We met children like Haja and Gibril, who participate in their student health club and educate their peers and family members about the importance of hygiene to prevent disease.

we also visitedTombo, a fishing community village with a population of approximately 17,100, about 45 minutes outside of Freetown. The Tombo Peripheral Health Unit, supported by UNICEF, serves not only as a 24-hour clinic, but as a critical community resource for public health education. We witnessed a demo frequently given to mothers on how to utilize locally-based products like eggs and fish to avoid malnourishment.

Thought I was hiking a lot in Canada I didn’t hike each trail in this huge country, so it can be subjective opinion, but for me hiking in Yoho national park in British Columbia was most impressive. Next time I would love to go there with tent as there so much more to see and you can camp in backcountry. But you can still see a lot even if you have only one day. For one day visit I suggest combine two trails – Lake Oesa Trail and Opabin Plateau Circuit. The combined trail length probably will be less then 8-9km (5-6 miles) with maximum 240-250 meters (800ft) elevation gain. This allow you to see O’Hara and Mary lakes from above (first picture) and to visit Lake Oesa with Rocky Mountains behind it (second photo), visit Opabin Plateau with some smaller lakes and come back down to lake O’Hara. Doesn’t it sound like perfect day in the mountains with easy hiking? There is one very important thing – you must prepare for this trip in advance. Field visit to Sierra Leone

Carolina Alvarez Pusterla works in the development department at the U.S. Fund for UNICEF. She is accompanying donors to see UNICEF programs in Sierra Leone.

Sierra Leone is a surprisingly young country. Close to half the population (48%) is under the age of 18. The country's future depends on children growing up to be healthy, educated, and productive adults. However, the survival, development, and protection of a large number of children are at risk.

Sierra Leone has some of the world's highest child and maternal mortality rates. The country is still in transition after a 10-year civil war devastated the country, killing more than 50,000 people between 1991 and 2002.

Despite these challenges, Sierra Leone is demonstrating significant positive trends, presenting a leading example of robust post-conflict reconstruction, with political stability and democracy - and the potential for economic progress.

Serge Ibaka visits Republic of Congo

Congolese National Basketball Association star and Oklahoma City Thunder Forward Serge Ibaka recently visited his home country, Republic of Congo, to work with the young street children in Brazzaville.

Serge may already have eighteen siblings, but he is willing to extend his family even more. "I am your big brother now. I will be coming here every year to see how we can improve the situation."

On his trip, Serge coordinated with the UNICEF Brazzaville office and visited two centers which open daily to serve the needs of the street children, Espace Jarrot and the all-girls center Action de Solidarite. These centers provide the children with basic human needs that are otherwise difficult for them to obtain. In addition they provide them with recreational facilities and opportunities for them to become reintegrated into society and school-systems.

With UNICEF support, a two-day table tennis tournament was organized in which 40 boys from the streets of Brazzaville competed. It was intended to draw attention to the growing number of street children in Congo and the challenges they face.

"For many young people sports is a door of opportunity and hope," said Serge who can be seen as a great role model to the young children, considering that he was at one point in their shoes.

He faced many of the challenges that these kids are currently going through while he was growing up in Brazzaville. Serge's story serves as a great example of how hard work and focus can allow you to follow your dreams and his visit was a great chance for these children to hear about it first-hand.

Serge's good work will be continued as he is planning to start a project for street children in Brazzaville through UNICEF.

Away with Potter and his Magical Magic

I love the Harry Potter movies. But have you ever noticed all the magic in them? Bullshit, right?

Last night I stole away from my sleeping family, drove down to the multiplex, and witnessed something magical. That would be the conclusion to Harry Potter's long running and beloved on-screen saga; Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2. The title is unfortunately long winded, and yet the movie doesn't feel nearly as drawn-out as the 130 minute run time would suggest. From curtain to curtain J.K. Rowling's latest Hollywood payday is jam-packed with both action and adventure, wizards and wands, love and loss; and I thoroughly enjoyed each moment of it.

But I was also happy to see the whole thing end, despite my affections for Harry, Ron, and a suddenly very grown up Hermione. I suppose in some way I was happy to hear a decade of magic talk come to a close. While the books and movies will live on in the cultural conversation for generations to come, and who knows how much longer after that, at least for the next little while we won't be hearing so much chatter about muggles and Hufflepuffs.

Magic is the central supposition of Harry Potter, but it's also the part of the story that routinely itches at me. See, I tend to like plausibility in my fiction. How are these little wizards making these things happen? When they wave their wands and say these magical words, who precisely is it that's listening? At least in science fiction attempts are made to explain why and how certain people have certain powers, but the best excuse in tales of sorcery is always the same. "It's just magic."

Now, before you roll your eyes keep in mind that I've already called myself a big fan. Obviously I can suspend my disbelief about the magic stuff, and indeed I could totally watch another movie or two if they were forthcoming. Nor do I begrudge the hardcore fans of the series their good times; many of whom were taught a love of reading by J.K. Rowling's imaginative books. Potter was a series I initially ignored but grew to love, and I'm not taking a single thing away from it.

All I'm saying is this; there's almost certainly no such thing as magic in this world, and now that Harry Potter is over, I'm happy to be finished talking about it for a while.

Ah, the party topic that everybody loves. The most controversial statement that a skeptic can utter to a mixed crowd. "There is no such thing as magic!" More so than specific beliefs about religions or various post-death survival schemes, the idea of some sort of magic existing somewhere is the one idea that most people desperately cling to. Yet to the skeptic it's one that we can't help but wholly reject.

According to (most) skeptics, we live in a Universe devoid of magic. A cosmos governed by physical laws, and nothing else besides that. That's because there's never been any good evidence for anything remotely magical, and skeptics tend to like that evidence stuff. To the rest of the world, that possibility seems to be a terrifying and vacant prospect. Plenty of people in today's culture have rejected formal religion, some of them as a direct result of learning about science. Many don't believe in a deity of any kind, but no magic? If that's the case, then what possible reason could there be to live?

Non sequiturs aside, keep in mind that I'm not suggesting your average person believes there's a Diagon Alley hidden in every mid-sized town. Rather it seems that folks are tied to the notion that in at least some abstract way, magic must exist; at least somewhere, at least in some form. But what does the word even mean? The Oxford definition is as follows:

Yet I think to many the concept is broader than that, or at least a certain degree fuzzier. The word magic doesn't necessarily have to be a magical act performed by a conjurer, but can also mean some special spark at the center of living things. In fact it's been given a million meanings beyond that. The only important defining characteristic of magic seems to be that it's something unconstrained by natural laws. It's the idea that some things can escape these laws and exist in a supernatural state. And by leaving the door open for the supernatural, all sorts of possibilities remain, well, possible.

If magic exists in any form, then anything is possible; maybe even the soul surviving death. And if the souls of the dead are still around somewhere, maybe we can talk to them? And if that's possible, why not E.S.P.? Or even 75 million year old dudes named Xenu? Despite the fact that every shred of evidence suggests that none of these things exist, the very concept of magic gives each one of them some intellectually lazy form of credibility. What possible argument could one make to defeat these notions when the words "it's just magic" are considered a suitable rebuttal?

People don't expect to see magic in their immediate surroundings. Sure, there are kooks everywhere, but keep in mind how many people there are on this planet. Very few of them insist that they've seen supernatural things first hand, and almost nobody's claimed to have done something magical themselves. You'd have to be completely batshit to invoke a supernatural excuse in a court of law. Why? Well because there's simply no evidence in our immediate surroundings of anything magical. When it comes to the likelihood of magic in their immediate spheres, most folks are dyed-in-the-wool skeptics.

People only really allow themselves the luxury of belief in magic when it's kept at a very far distance, be it in space or time. Or perhaps they posit that magic happens only in hidden places, or at very small scales. They therefore preserve their beliefs by storing them beyond the borders of observation. The only difference between skeptics and everyone else is that we tend to extrapolate the local trend of reality outwards to the Universe.

Sure, I could wax poetic about the magic of the real world, as I've often done in the past. Indeed this whole blog is aimed at highlighting the incredible things man can observe or create using the 'magic' of their own minds. The universe is, in some ways of looking at it, a magical place; and in those same ways we indeed are magical creatures.

I could draw that comparison, but won't be doing so today. Today's a day for something entirely different. I loved every aspect of the Harry Potter movies, and I wouldn't have changed a thing about them. But after a decade of having to suspend disbelief for the sake of a good yarn, today I'm feeling quite fond of reality.

Today is the 40th Anniversary of George Harrison's 1971 Concert for Bangladesh at Madison Square Garden.
