MASS
by Henning M. Lederer
The following animation was sent to me by it's creator, Henning Lederer, who's work I featured previously in the post 'The Machinery Inside Your Guts'. That project was intended as a an interactive installation inside a museum, and this one may have been meant for something similar.
I say that because the pacing of the animation, which just might be a bit long and repetitive for the average internet viewer's patience*, made me immediately think of a great use for it. How amazing would it be to leave Henning's animation looping on a bigscreen at your next cocktail party? Sure, that may be far from what he intended when making it, but I can totally picture it.
It's the sort of repetitive, pattern driven visual experience that people would love losing themselves in as long as their brains can also maintain a connected focus on the conversation around them. As the evening wore on, and the imbibements kept flowing, MASS would eventually become a great conversation piece.
Test my theory! Pour yourself a martini, bust out the fondue set, and have a long look at MASS. If you agree, plan your next party accordingly!
*I hope that notion doesn't offend Henning. This is obviously a beautiful and engaging piece of work. I just mean that the attention span of the average internet audience is maybe 9 seconds, so any 5 minute long, non-narrative visual experiment is bound to lose some people.
