The World's Most Beautiful Haunted House

Banner

Sorry folks, I just can't stop talking about Halloween these days.

Ever since I joined the Canadian Haunters Association, it's been all that's on my mind. Last night was the CHA's November pub meet, and by attending I had a chance to talk shop with all sorts of seasoned scare-mongers. The ideas they shared with me were invaluable, and my 2012 haunt will benefit from their advice.

And yet when I returned home from the event, my appetite for all things spook-tacular was still unsatisfied. So I jumped on the web, started searching for examples of other home haunts, and happened upon something truly astounding.

Now, as for the title of this post. I know, I know. You're asking "How on earth can a haunted house be described as beautiful? Sickening, vile, übergross; these are the words one uses to recount the qualities of a good fright house... you've gone batshit Goodspeed!"

Normally I'd never consider the use of such a term, but in the case of this very special haunted house, no other word will do. Just have a look at the images below. The Hellizondo haunt features some of the most gorgeous set pieces and props I've seen anywhere, let alone in a spook-show. We're talking movie-level set decoration here. They start with a wickedly inventive theme, (a travelling Russian freak-circus, in this case) and then get to work designing gorgeous handmade props.

"At the Hellizondo Haunt, we make 95% of our props by hand. You’ll find corpses built from PVC & paper Mache, audio-animatronic skeletons, and many props that are unique one-of-a-kind sculptures. The 5% we buy are bugs, spiderwebs, crows, and maybe some rats."

It shows. The 2010 version of their current theme "Rasputin’s Carnival of Risk"* won the coveted “Best Indoor Walk Through” from Haunters Video Awards. Being a haunter myself** I know how much work it is to put one of these things on, but I can't imagine how much work would be involved in doing something like the Hellizondo folks do.

Every inch of the haunt conveys the extensive talent and care that went into it. It doesn't just look like a nightmare, it looks like a Terry Gilliam film about a nightmare. The Hellizondo haunt is at the same time spooky, stylish, strange, distinct, demented; and for lack of a better term, beautiful. To me it's more than just a spook-show; it's the quintessential example of the haunted house as an art form.

Here are some photos of their last two haunts, followed by a video of the 2010 event. According to the creators' website they're not sure if a 2012 installment of the haunt will happen, but good lord, do I ever hope it does.

*The motif they tackled in their first 3 years of operation was a Haunted Tiki Island theme, found here.

**Yes, I've linked to my own haunt twice in one article. What can I say? Self promotion is a bitch. Oh, you want more? Done.
