Lumaajuuq: A dark and beautiful short film

Lum
Sorry for the week-long hiatus folks. I've been unbelievably busy... believe me! Here's something cool to watch until I find to time to write another proper article. Stay tuned!

While searching for some style references for an upcoming project, I decided to check out the latest from one of my favourite animators: Daniel Gies. Daniel is an extremely talented artist, and his portfolio is filled with just the sorts of projects I'd love to do more of. What's inspiring is that like me, (and unlike many animators who work with characters) Daniel is an After Effects guy! See my previous post on his work here.

Anyway, a short film I found on his page absolutely floored me; not just because of the stunning job both Daniel and director/animator Alethea Arnaquq-Baril pulled off, but also due to the deep pathos in the film itself. Based on part of the Inuit folk-tale The Blind Boy and the LoonLumaajuuq is a very dark telling of the typical origin myth.* It's coloured by a haunting soundtrack, highly stylized visuals, and tangible sense of tragedy; a feeling which didn't leave me until well after I watched it.

Have a look at this lovingly created, and award-winning film. It's just over 7 minutes, and well worth the time.

NOTE: I had some problems playing this full-screen in Chrome, but it worked in Safari. If you have problems, try another browser.

*A term which need not be reserved only for stories about the creation of the entire universe, but also for the origins of any feature of the natural world; in this case, the Narwhal whale.
