On Being a Dork in Love

Nerdy Dirty
Love illustrations for the geek in all of us - by Nicole Martinez

I have this article in my head just waiting to be written. It's all about the complex social dynamics of calling someone a nerd. See, being a nerd, or calling oneself a nerd, has become a point of pride in the last decade. Perhaps that's because so much of mankind's daily busyness, it's toing and froing so to speak, now occurs online. Whatever the reason, it doesn't change the fact that the act of calling somebody else a nerd still retains it's ability to sting.

In a playful discussion with a friend on Facebook yesterday the following insults were hurled. An abridged version below.

Friend: I can't wait for the new coins I ordered to get here. Does that make me old or just uncool?

Me: Neither, because even elderly nerds don't collect coins.

Friend: Hater! Nerd am I? I have word for you: astronomy.

Me: Astronomy is considered nerdy because it requires brains. Coin collecting is considered nerdy because it's sad and lonely.

Calling someone a geek is rarely meant as a compliment, and yet celebrating one's own geekery is perfectly fine. But what happens when you're a dork, and you're in love with another dork? What do you do then?

Nicole Martinez may have the answer. She designed this series of posters to express the dweebiest kind of love, the love between one nimrod and another. (I'm quickly running out of synonyms here, folks) They may contain some pretty corny wordplay, but they're well designed, a little bit touching, and very cute.

You know, in that nerdy sort of way.

Enjoy!
