Life in the Slow Lane

Life

Simone Tyler is a colleague from back in the days when I used to work in television production studios. She's a make-up artist by trade, so I'd hire her from time to time to help out on the shoots I was putting together. Since then my career has diverged into post production, and Simone left the big city for more rural surroundings, so it's been quite a while since we've seen each other in the flesh.

Enter Facebook. Some time ago Simone started posting photos from around her new home in Prince Edward County — a beautiful little corner of the world in which I've vacationed more than once — and since then my admiration for her pictures has only grown. Eventually it reached a point where I told her "Keep it up and you're going to get yourself blogged"

She did, and here we are today.

Simone uploads many of her photos to an album entitled 'Life in the Slow Lane', and I can't think of better words to summarize the story her pictures tell. While working exclusively with a point-and-shoot camera, Simone seems to have a knack for finding the sorts of moments only captured through patience, attention to fine detail, and a curiosity about nature.

When I asked Simone to describe her process she noted that "When I see a tree I imagine its history and study its surroundings, but I also see the little veins in the leaves, the small details." She goes on to add that "Natural light fascinates me. I am not a musical person, but to me watching light hit, reflect and bounce around in nature is very much like music!"

I really enjoy Simone's images, mostly because they convey a certain attitude in the person who took them. While she's not necessarily a technical photographer, her pictures tell you the way she sees her surroundings. One cannot capture such subtle and sublime moments without patience and curiosity; without possessing the right kind of eyes. Whether it be a caterpillar, the morning dew, or the smallest glint of light, all of it is worth Simone's close attention.

It seems like a splendid and fulfilling way to look at the world. And as for the slow lane, well, that seems like quite a lovely place to live.

Enjoy!
